When you laid the unfinished cross-beam
on your back and stumbled through jeering streets,
rough edges pressing into broken skin

when they raised you up on nails
driven through flesh and bone
all you hoped was that everyone

who looked to the hill where you hung
would know that not a nail more was needed
to make your work complete.
